Alzheimer's - MIND DIET

       September 21st is observed as World Alzheimer’s Day . This September marks the 7th world Alzheimer’s month since the campaign was launched in 2012. This is an international campaign aimed at raising awareness and challenge the common people that surrounds Alzheimer related dementia. From previous studies, an average of 2 out of 3 people globally have little or no understanding of Alzheimer’s and associated dementia in their countries. Most people often think that this disease is a normal part of ageing.

      Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that impairs memory and other mental functions. It is the most common form of dementia that generalizes memory loss and loss of other essential cognitive abilities that are serious enough to interfere with an individual’s daily life.


      lets rise the purple ribbon, take an oath to create awareness on Alzheimer and help our grand parents, parents and all, especially elderly. Give a helping hand for them to remember things. This condition is an irreversible and cannot be cured. So as we all know prevention is better than cure, lets know what is this disease, what are the symptoms and prevention through proper diet.

      Food is an important aspect of daily life not only for physical health and growth but also to maintain ones mood, behavior and nervous system. A healthy life style that makes way for the proper functioning of the immune system , combating nutritional deficiencies and also plays a vital role in supporting the development and functioning of the brain. Though there are many new diets coming up to prevent diabetes, hypertension,obesity etc.,  there is no specific diet against Alzheimer disease, however this disease is the 6th leading cause of death worldwide. 
      Being a chronic disease, Alzheimer disease, does not have any permanent cure and thus its prevention is better than cure. and one such way of prevention is by consuming a specific diet. it is called MIND DIET. MARTHA CLARE MORRIS, a nutritional epidemiologist took an excellent initiative in developing a brain friendly diet termed the 'MIND' diet which helps in preventing Alzheimer disease. The term MIND actually stands for Mediterranean - DASH intervention for Neurodegenerative delay.
 The MEDITERRANEAN DIET mostly comprises of vegetables, nuts,fish,olive oils, fruits and red wine. whereas the DASH diet comprises of eating whole grain, fruits and vegetables and also a low salt diet.

The below foods are to be included in diet which helps in enhancing your memory. in a brief about the below picture include:
  • 3 servings of whole grains
  • At least 5 servings of nuts per week
  • Berries 2 or more servings per week
  • green leafy vegetables should be of daily inclusion
  • other vegetables as usual
  • wine one serving per day
  • poultry or chicken twice per week
  • beans and legumes up-to 2 or 3 servings in a week
  • fish 1 or more servings in a week
  • olive oil should be used as main cooking oil.

       Along with the appropriate diet, including exercise and managing stress in ones daily schedule helps a lot in reducing the risk towards Alzheimer's disease. also make your children to learn a healthy eating habits and indulge them in regular physical activity which helps them to boost the memory and also they will be strong further in their later ages.
       Spend some time with elderly, make them recall their old memories, give them small puzzles or indulge them in their favorite activity, which helps their brain to function well.
